Long story short, my friend got me pretty good. That could have explained why I received an alert, yet did not see any message. So I waited patiently for my friend to finish typing, figuring that Messages were having yet some other issues.
As I received a message from him, I opened up the Message application and could not see anything but a typing indicator.
